Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
