The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
