Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
