The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
